A rootsy weekend: April Verch Band, Mipso, Brother Son

A plethora of roots music acts is playing throughout Southwest Virginia over the next few days.
It starts Thursday, with fiddler, singer and dancer April Verch fronting her trio. Verch is from Canada’s Ottawa Valley, north of Lake Ontario and New York, and she brings folk music that’s common to that region. Turns out, it’s a music common to old-time, bluegrass and throwback jazz lovers in these parts, too.
Some of Verch’s best stuff features not just her sweet fiddle work, but step-dancing that is percussive enough to function as a drum break. Get an example from her number “Belle Election” on the 2015 album “The Newpart,” via youtu.be/oJiL1QdgdZY.
When she dances, saws and even sings all at once, that’s entertainment.
